At The Table

Meat, fire, banchan and ssam

Our favourite part is simple: a full table, old-style Korean marinades and everyone cooking together around the grill.

Our Story · Carnegie Since 2013

Our story began
before the restaurant.

Today · Carnegie Korean BBQ, shared around the table.

Mrs Kim's Grill began long before the restaurant opened in Carnegie. Mrs Kim had been preparing Korean BBQ meats and supplying them to restaurants and backyard barbecues across Melbourne for many years. By 2014, her business, Mrs Kim's BBQ, had been doing this for 20 years.

In 2013, her daughter Joanne opened Mrs Kim's Grill on Koornang Road. She brought her mother's marinades into a restaurant where guests could cook together at the table and enjoy the meat with fresh banchan.

Soon after we opened, Epicure visited the restaurant. The article, published on 4 March 2014, introduced our first dining room, rectangular table grills and the family business behind the food. Joanne described it simply: “This is the kind of food we'd serve our friends.”

Mrs Kim's Grill has changed over the years, but the food and the way we enjoy it remain much the same. We still prepare marinated meats, serve banchan and bring people together around the grill.

Why We Do It

Built on three principles

Every decision at Mrs Kim's Grill starts by asking why. These are the principles we keep coming back to.

01

Old-style marinades

Sweet soy, garlic, chilli and time. Our marinated meats are made for the grill, not for shortcuts.

02

Cook together

The rectangular grill sits in the middle so the meal becomes something everyone shares, turns and talks over.

03

Balance every bite

A little meat, a little ssamjang, something fresh and something pickled. That is how the table comes alive.
